The stranger reader

In my last post, I made a reference to "the stranger reader".

To explain:

This was Lionel Abrahams' advice to poets: Remember the stranger-reader. The reader of your poem will not always understand everything you write, your poem does not always need to explain everything, but you must keep the stranger-reader in mind and realise they are trying to make sense of your world, trying to understand you. Help them to understand you.Well, I always found that good advice. I don't know that I always followed it.

Does Australia Need an ICAC for Poetry?  David Musgrave's article in Southerly is not new, but it's worth reading if you missed it....
